Tuberculosis Day

AMSA UPH's Tuberculosis Day 2012

  

Last month, on the 31^st March 2012, we AMSA held an event in recognition of World Tuberculosis Day or TB Day for short. TB Day originally falls on the 24^th March worldwide, each year. But because of this and that, we decided to held our event a week later.

This TB Day is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. Today tuberculosis causes the deaths of about 1.7 million people each year, mostly in the Third World (Wikipedia).In Indonesia alone, there are at least half a million new cases of TB per year and 175,000 deaths. Tuberculosis is the second killer of adults after cardiovascular disease and the most important killer out of all the communicable diseases.Indonesia made it into the list of 22 high-burden tuberculosis (TB) countries in the world, and ranks third. So this is why it is important for us as future doctors to take part in the tuberculosis day.

After a long, long, long, very long search, we decided to go to a Puskesmas Balaraja. We planned to give a seminar on tuberculosis to the people around there and give some souvenirs as well. And that’s exactly what we did.

When we got to the Puskesmas, it’s quite embarrassing that some people were already there waiting for us. But to be honest, we told them the program will start at 9, and at 8 many were already there. Maybe, they were just so excited about us coming and that’s really good. So when we got there, we got excited as well. There were around 30 participants at our seminar, not including kids, and most of them were women.

Raden Annisa Citra Permadi ( Icha ) and Desak Ketut Nariswari Pramegia (Gia), became both the MCs and the speakers for our program. We showed the people in the Puskesmas a video about tuberculosis awareness, which is a courtesy of YouTube (I’ll post the link below if just in case anyone wanted to watch the video too), and we explained to them about tuberculosis, what it is and how to identify it. Then we held a Q&A session. They asked us anything they wanted to know about tuberculosis, and us, with the help of the head doctor in the Balaraja Puskesmas, dr. Ronny, answered the best we could. They were really enthusiastic. Afterwards we held a mini quiz about what they just heard on tuberculosis. And whoever could answer gets a free TB Day calendar, which got the ladies really excited. It feels really good seeing how full of participation spirit the people had, it’s an indication that our program was quite a success. It pleases all of us. In the middle of the seminar, and the Q&As we gave them snacks to eat so that they don’t get too hungry. Then just before the program’s about to end, we hand out souvenirs, biscuits and hand sanitizers.

So overall I could say that our TB Day program was a success. Really grateful that we could take part in TB Day, and meet so many wonderful, enthusiastic people like the ones in Balaraja. May more and more become aware of tuberculosis!

CANCER DAY

AMSA UPH's WORLD CANCER DAY 2012

Started with an idea from Internal’s division of AMSA UPH, all members of AMSA UPH should be active members and learn how to organize an event and so all members were divided into 3 teams and each team was given a different theme. These groups then divided into World Cancer Day, Tuberculosis Day or Earth & Health Day.

On 4^th February, World Cancer Day was marked to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. First, group 1 planned to hold this event on 17^th February 2012 while we will combine cancer day with valentine day. However, there’s another event on so this event was moved to 25^th February 2012.

In this opportunity, group 1 which are consist 20 members with 3 additional seats for another AMSA UPH members were celebrated this event on YKI (Yayasan Kanker Indonesia) at Lebak Bulus. In this event, there are cancer patient, cancer survivor and also the committee of YKI. Not only them, we also cooperated with the committee so all patients and survivors were brought one of their closest person to join this event.

We started this event with pray, then continued with first session which were consist of designed patchwork by each survivors and patients and made valentines card by their closest person. While they made their handmade, the committee from AMSA UPH joined them and so they could shared some of their struggle and their fights into this cancer.

This event was continued with second session which was decorated chiffon cake by survivor, patients and their closest person while they were divided into 3 small groups first. After finished their decoration, they were asked to write some wishes which was in our plan will be hanged on halogens balloons. Unfortunately, these halogens balloons could not afford the heaviness of all wishing cards so we burnt these wishing cards as a symbolic that this wishes already sent to God.

After finished all the main session, we arrived at the closing session which was handover valentine cards from the patients and survivors’ closest person to patients and survivor. Because of not all patients and survivors brought their closest person, the committee already made some cards for them so everyone still got valentine card. We also share all cakes that had been decorated before and took pictures of them.

 Overall, we can conclude that this event was run smoothly even though we only had a really short time to prepare this event and this is the first event conducted by some members. We learn lot of things from them like their fighting spirit and we could also give some care and concern for them. We hope this event will be one of the most memorable event for them like for us.

AMSA DETECTION 2012

AMSA DETECTION 2012

This year AMSA Detection was held at Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, from the 24^th-26^th February 2012. Some delegates from AMSA UPH participated; our very own President of AMSA, Nathania Sutisna, and along with some others, Patricia, Annisa Pramadi, Victor Christian,Tanessa Audrey, Immanuela Hartono, Josephine Dermawan, Keziah Tuerah, and Andrew Lukman. We were all welcomed there by our LO, Nathan Aditya Wilyanto. Which of all, everyone agreed to be the best LO ever (even if it is the first for some). There were many that participated, around 21 universities. Among all are the delegates from UI, UAJ, UGM, UNAIR, UKI, UB, and so much more. This AMSA Detection has 2 big main events, the Debate Competition and the Social Act. The Debaters from UPH were Annisa Pramadi, Immanuela Hartono, and Keziah Tuerah. The rest were delegates and were to participate in the Social Act.

The Debate Competition was fun and was a great experience even if we did not win. If  not mistaken there were approximately 26 debate teams, because some university sent out 2 teams. There were 6 rounds in the Debate Competition; two pre-eliminary rounds, one octo finals, one quarter finals, 1 semifinals, and finals.  We had the chance to debate against the host, UB B in our first pre-eliminary round and in the second pre-eliminary round, we faced UI A. In the first two rounds, points were accumulated, and the teams with higher points move on to the octo finals. UPH team surprisingly did get through to octo finals along with 15 other teams. In the rest of the rounds, once you lose the debate, you don’t go on. So in the octo finals we were up against Atma Jaya A (UAJ), and thank God we made it through. We got into the quarter finals along with 7 other universities. In the quarter finals we faced UMI, and there we lost. UMI later faced UNPAD, UNPAD won and on the other side, UI B faced UNHAS and UNHAS won. In the finals, it was UNHAS vs UNPAD, and at the end UNHAS took the crown. They deserved to win, they were really good informed debaters. The UPH team was pretty happy with the results, it was their first time debating together and never had the chance to practice before together as a team but they turned out to be a good and solid team.  Maybe next time we’ll bring something home for UPH. *fingers crossed*

While the Debate Competition was running, the other delegates were busy as well. They all were participating in the Social Act. In this Social Act, they visited a school, SMAN 4. There they held a seminar talking about BMI (Body Mass Index), obese and, healthy food and unhealthy food. After the seminar every student in the school was weight and their height was taken. Then their BMI was measured from the data taken, and also it was plotted to the growth chart by CDC. The diameter of the arms and waist were also measured. For those who turned out to be malnutrition, underweight, obese or PEM, were consulted by the doctors, and eventually being followed up by the doctors. This was a good thing, because we got to give something to the community through this social act. After the Social Act, the delegates got to experience different cultures and food from different areas, through “Javanese Cultural Fair”. There were many food and snacks from different areas, and they were some traditional dances you could try. According to one of the delegates, it was very fun.

After the final debate competition, everyone, the debaters, and the delegates all gathered together for the Farewell Party. Apart from being really exhausted after all the activities in the day, the Farewell Party was pretty refreshing. Getting to see some of the debate opponents not so in a “serious” mode as they sing and dance was good. It sort of changed your perspective about them.  You first see them as being the geeky, intimidating person, and then when you hear their voices and the song they sing, all are wowed.  It was a wonderful way to end the exhausting but fun day.

The next day it was recreation day.  Our LO brought us to shops that sold Malang’s traditional snacks then we went to this beautiful place to eat before we leave. The whole experience was so amazing. In all between the activities, we got to make lots of new acquaintance and try lots of new food. Its worth all the time spent. We definitely recommend others to participate in next year’s AMSA Detection!!!

WORLD NUTRITION DAY

AMSA UPH's WORLD NUTRITION DAY 2012

AMSA UPH carried out a social activity on the 18^th February of 2012 to acknowledge the World Nutrition Day which falls on January. The goal for the activity was to increase awareness from the society of Desa Teluk Naga about the importance of balanced nutrition by giving them educations.

The theme of the activity was “Sehat Makananku, Sehat Keluargaku” which consists of giving education of the importance of balanced nutritional intake, how to prepare a healthy and good meal, advantages of decreasing allowance to be saved and giving demonstration of the proper technique of washing our hands.

Overall, the event was a success. 31 people of Teluk Naga families participated and every AMSA members run their tasks accordingly.

Personality and Action in Leadership Training

Personality and leadership are two aspects that really important now a days. Even though the smartest person in the world needs a good personality and leadership skill to be success. Its not easy to build a good personality and leadership skill, some trainings are needed to develop those skills. Therefore AMSA UPH and AMSA UAJ have held 2 days seminar of Personality and Action in Leadership Training (PALET).

First day of PALET was held on Unika Atma Jaya, Pluit. Vice Dean 1 of FK UAJ opened the event by a short speech then continued by some words from Nathania (Representative of AMSA UPH) and Suryadi (Representative of AMSA UAJ). The Ice breaking then held after those speech. In this moment, all participants introduced themselves to one and other for the first time. After they had known each other, Session 1 was held. In this session the speaker was Victor Setiawan Taslim, a student of National University of Singapore who also a professional speaker from “Supermind” Institution. Victor mrought a topice about “I’mpossibility”. Two important things that we could learn from this session. We learnt that success is come from a habit and that we must be an optimist person to see every oppurtinities in every occasion. This Session is very interesting and Victor was made all the participants to have more confidence on  theirselves to go through their limit and achieve something better than they already had now. 

The speaker for the second and third session was Ivanaldy Kabul. He is the young entrepreneur (19 YO) who has a good leadership skill, he even lead a study house that call FISH ( Filial Inteligence Study House) with more than 50 students. In the second session, Ivan was give the topic about leadership. In this session, the participants was learn how to lead people, how to place people in the in the right place, and how to become a good and brave leader with big dreams. And in the last session that day, Ivan shared about time management, networking and some others. And for the closing, he gave one performance for all the participants. He played one song (Valentine theme) with saxophone which make all the participants fell into his performances.

      The event was continued to the second day. In this second day, the event was held on Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Pelita Harapan. The day was start with campus tour, all the participants was taken around FK UPH. After the campus tour the event was continue with some mini games ( mini outbound). The games was created to improve the team work and friendship within the participants from AMSA UAJ and AMSA UPH. After a long, tiring, yet fun games, all the participants had some lunch before they came to the next session which was AMSA Session. On AMSA Session, we invited some important people from AMSA INDONESIA for them to shared some things with us. The People that we invite were :

5.  Huilee – Secretary of Membership & Development AMSA INDONESIA, FK UNTAR 2009

In this AMSA Session they were sharing about how they were “ served” AMSA and how fun it is. Not only them, Nathania and Suryadi as the representative of AMSA UPH and AMSA UAJ also shared about the fun to work in the AMSA. From this AMSA session all  the participants, whose new member of AMSA, was looked really motivated after heard the sharings.

After all, from this PALET event, we really hope that the new member can learn  a lot of things to become a good LEADERSHIP with good PERSONALITY. Also we hope that the friendship between AMSA UPH and AMSA UAJ will be last forever. And the important things is we really hope that the new member, after this event and after heard some sharing from their alumnus, will make some remarkable things for AMSA.
