WORLD DISABILITY DAY

WORLD DISABILITY DAY 2012

World Disability Day, a day to appreciate the disabled, both physically and mentally disabled is celebrated every 3 December. To participate on this day, on 20 November 2011, AMSA UPH held a community outreach for all the mental disabled people in Yayasan Bhakti Luhur, Jakarta. This 20 participants came from any age; from toodlers to adults. Most of them are autistic, ADHD, Down's syndrome, etc.

The event is started by a brunch, a morning exercise, and followed with a games. The winner of the games was awarded with a gift. The next event is movie time. After watching a comedy film 'Mr.Bean', the participant will have a chance to answer some questions in a little quiz at the emd of the movie. The quiz met some difficulties because some participants have speaking or hearing difficulties so they cannot participate. Some participant also performed a little show, like singing or playing music instruments.

The outreach is both interesting and challenging because this is the first event that allows  us to interact with mentally disabled people. Sharing the day with them made us realize that there are many things in our life we should be thankful for. They taught us many things, they taught us about life.

The aim for gaving this Welcoming Party is to let everyone to get acquainted woth each other and be comfortable to interact with each other. The Welcoming Party had been a tradition every single year, and yet, this year’s Welcoming Party is extremely PHENOMENAL. Everyone is seems to be having a goof time and it will be a shame to miss out the fun. The event isi started with a little opening wird by dr. Anila Paul, followed by greeting by our own representative Nathania Sutisna.

Greeting by Nathania Sutisna as Representative of AMSA UPH
Greeting by Leony as Chief Comittee

Then, the whole members had dinner after little mini game which is done with the aim, to create warm atmosphere between all individuals. The comittee had divided the poeple into 6 different groups ( Lymph, Artery Blood, Vein Blood, Hematemesis Melena, Bilirubin and Gallblader).

The Groups

It is during the mini game where everyone seems to be enjoying themselved and gets to know with their members’ quite well. The part that birngs everyone together is the part where each group had to figure out the clues given because it requires everyone to participate and put their ideas. The aim of these games is not to win but to get everyone to know each other and build a feeling of togetherness with all members.

Basically, the Welcoming Party was a success and we believed that this year’s AMSA UPH will be better than it already is.

FRPT

AMSA UPH FUNDRAISING TEAM 2012

Happy New Year 2012, People! A new semester is come and we already passed a half year with tons of events in our university. As we know, Asian Medical Student Association as known as AMSA is one of the most active organization in Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) and there are many work plans that had been done in UPH and one of the newest work program that we had is Fund Raising Planning Team.

But first, the recruitment for Fund Raising Planning Team ( FRPT) 2011-2012 was conducted first to made a group which responsible and have passion in for this team. This team formed to make some plans and collect some money for any events which will conduct by AMSA in UPH. After this new team formed, they directly made some plan and some of work program had been done by them. The first work program which was conducted was selling Halloween cookies before and after Halloween day. Find out that this cookies was favored by students, another cookies was sold on Christmas day.

However, there’s some exception here because of lack of office hour in university. The cookies were only sold by ordered cookies before the selling day and on the last day of study, cookies were sent to each costumer without any additional charges.

Besides that, there’s also work plan which was aimed for helping people outside UPH. This work programmed was by open stand in Gelora Bung Karno on Sunday, 13th November 2011. We offer some services like blood sugar test, uric acid test, cholesterol test and free blood pressure test for a runner and other people there. This event was open for other AMSA member and not only by FRPT to give another chance for others. Fortunately, people welcome us and we served many people on that day.

Overall, we glad with this new team because we are not only looking for money but we also learn to serve other through this.

10 Unique Facts About Your Body!

As we all know, especially for future doctors like ourselves, our body is full of mysteries. Well, we have put together a list of 10 amazing facts about the human body, thanks to a few sites from the internet that I will be mentioning later on. You might have heard it or read it somewhere else before as well. So anyways enjoy!

1.             An average human body sheds around 600,000 particles of skin every hour; that is about 1.5 pounds or 0.675 kg a year. And by age 70, the average human will have lost 105 pounds or 47,25 kg of skin. That’s a lot of skin!

2.           If the average human man never trimmed his beard it would be almost 30 feet or 9 meters long in his lifetime, seeing that the fastest growing hair on a human's body is males beard's hair. What would dragging that around feel like? Having long hair at the back of my head already feel sometimes uncomfortable, can’t imagine having 9 meters hair in your face!

3.             A person blinks an average of 25 times per minute when awake. Which means  approximately 1500 times per hour, 36000 per day,  and 13140000 times a year, if he/she never sleeps, of course.

4.             15 million cells in blood alone are destroyed in the human body every second. Which means by the time you finished reading this sentence, 50,000 of the cells in your body would have died and would have already been replaced with new cells. RIP 50,000 cells.

5.             The tongue is the only muscle in the human body that is not attached at both ends and it is said to be the strongest muscle compared to its size. Unfortunately you’re not gonna be able to carry your extra bags with them.

6.             It is said that we’re taller in the morning because throughout the day, the cartilage between the bones is compressed making us 1 cm shorter. So if you checked your height in day time, just add 1 cm to it, it does make a lot of difference :p

7.             The average human is originally born with more than 300 bones, but when they reach adulthood, some bones fuse together making an adult end up with only around 206 bones. More than 94 bones short from the original amount?!

8.             Your brain comes out to play at night. You’d think that your brain is more active during the day, when the rest of your body is. But it’s not. Well that explains those late night insomnia and why everything seems much more interesting at night when you’re about to sleep. Your brain is more active when you sleep.

9.             The brain, through the nose can identify and remember more than 50,000 different scents. It can differentiate one smell from the other. And it is said that women are better than man at identifying smells! So guys, you better smell good :p

10.          Your feet can produce a pint of sweat a day. There are 500,000 (250,000 for each) sweat glands in your feet, and that can mean a great deal of stinky sweat. That explains smelly feet!! I recommend changing your socks every day!
